3DTV NEXT YEAR AT HOME

Sony has predicted that 3D TV will be ‘in every home’ by the end of 2010 – and that PlayStation 3 will become a key driver in for the technology.Speaking at the at IFA technology trade show in Berlin, the electronics giant revealed that PS3 would be fully compatible with a range of 3D TVs it plans to roll out next year.Industry insiders have told MCV that Sony has already overseen the internal development of 3D games – but are holding off from announcing them until an industry 3D standard has become apparent. The Telegraph reports that Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s chief executive (pictured), said 3D technology would be offered across the majority of its products. He gave no indication of price – but analysts expect early 3D TVs to cost several thousand pounds."Today, 3D is clearly on its way to the mass market,” Mr Stringer was expected to tell a press conference, reports the paper.

"As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed.“But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."It follows similar announcements earlier this year from other television manufacturers, including LG and Phillips.British Sky Broadcasting has announced plans to launch its first 3D channel next year.I seriously doubt this. Plenty of people I know don't even have HD yet, so a 3D tv in every home is unlikey. Sure, I'll be one of the early(ish) adopters who get stung by high prices that will inevitably fall just after I've bought one, but still, I can't see more than 5% of people I know shelling out tonnes of cash to replace their brand new HDTVs already, especially when so little content is 3d capable yet. That "in every home by 2010" is just corporate speak, Stringer just wants to grab some headlines and tell evryone Sony has brught about another innovation. Seen the tech running and sounds stupid, but I dont like the idea of having to wear some quite frankly cheesey sunglasses whilst watching "heroes" or the latest hollywood comic book to film release. Im also one of the late adopters, I have only owned a HDTV for four months now, so not going to put my hand in my pocket just yet (still waiting for the PS3 to drop to the magic £200 mark lol).
Overall though, the TV market is saturated. Alot of people I know now have their HDTV's sitting on their front room ceilings, so they need to bring out something new to drive profits, and keep the factories churning out. Remember, this is Sony's core business. They dont care so much about gaming as a whole, more the "multi-media experience" and the associated TV's and speaker systems you need in order to buy into that experience. Interesting times. Hope someone events a 3D Tv some day without the need for the aforementioned embarrassing glasses. Gonna make my living room "seduction technique" alot harder if they dont lol.I don't really see the point of 3D TV. There's nothing on half the time anyway so why would I want 3D. I have a slightly HD TV atm but don't have Sky HD or anythign because I won't pay a stupid extra ammount for it. Unless they give them away free and provide some useful 3D programmes I don't see the point. You get all the 3D movies at the moment but half the time the 3D is a gimicky kinda thing anyway. If you want seomthing in 3D go out instead of watching TV!!!!Isn't this from the same company that convinced everyone that the PS3 would give us "TrueHD gaming", so everyone bought a 1080p HDTV, only to find 95% of the PS3 stuff is actually in 720p? Who is going to buy 3D TV's with that record of technology support? And just to expand on Rez's very valid point, not only are there plenty of people who wear glasses, there are also people with single eye deficiencies (like myself) that glasses don't fix.And then there are people, who don't have a second eye at all, so you can imagine how people like those enjoy 3D. So is he saying, people will buy 3D TV's even if they can't see 3d.I think Hyundai and Philips might have something to say on that front. I guess it will depend on which company will bulldoze the standards into their corner... money talks, as they say.

Google 3D TV Hyundai to see when this technology was brought to the home, you'll see it was over 12 months ago. It's funny really to see many companies suddenly emerging in the 3D arena, especially given that Blitz games - in producing Invincible Tiger - has already blazed a trail for the third dimension. I saw this at Videogame Nation at Urbis during a talk by the Olivers and while I was initially sceptical, when I slipped on those glasses, my jaw did drop. Only when you experience it do you see the potential. As gamers we shouldn't dismiss advancing tech. It's what makes our medium so exciting and with a Britsoft dev like Blitz pushing forward ahead of others, it's something to be proud of I reckon.
